Retaining Walls, Grading & Drainage in Mill Creek, WA

Mill Creek began as a master-planned community in the 1970s and became a city in 1983, built around its golf course and country club, with Mill Creek Town Center as its commercial heart and North Creek running through it as a greenway. It’s a suburban city of established neighborhoods, so dirt work here is about improving and reworking existing properties rather than clearing raw land. Reach Dirt Works serves Mill Creek homeowners and light commercial owners from nearby Snohomish.

What Mill Creek Projects Look Like

Backyard makeovers. Many Mill Creek lots have sloped or uneven yards. Homeowners call us to level a yard for a patio, lawn or play area with grading, to build retaining walls that terrace a slope, or to finish-grade ahead of a landscaper.

Drainage fixes. Established neighborhoods on glacial till soils often have yards that stay soggy all winter, or water that heads toward the house. Drainage work, such as French drains, footing drains and regrading, is some of our most common Mill Creek work.

Rebuilds and additions. Replacing an older home, adding an ADU or garage, or expanding a house means demolition, site prep and utility trenching in tight suburban spaces.

Greenbelts and buffers. Some Mill Creek lots back onto greenbelts and stream buffers, such as along North Creek. Work has to stay inside property and buffer limits, with good erosion control.

Light commercial. Parking and site improvements for small commercial properties.

Who Issues Permits

  • Inside Mill Creek city limits: the City of Mill Creek handles building, clearing and grading permits through its Permit Counter. Applications go through the city’s online portal (Building Permits; permitcounter@millcreekwa.gov, 425-551-7254). Check with the city before tackling a retaining wall or significant grading.
  • Outside city limits: unincorporated areas next to the city, including the Mill Creek East area the city has been studying for annexation, are currently permitted by Snohomish County PDS.
