Land Clearing & Access Roads in Granite Falls, WA

Granite Falls is the gateway to the Mountain Loop Highway, a small city between the Pilchuck River and the South Fork Stillaguamish at the foot of Mount Pilchuck. Out here the work is about wooded, sloped, rural ground: opening up a homesite, building a driveway that survives the winter, and getting water off the property. Reach Dirt Works serves Granite Falls and the surrounding foothills from our base in Snohomish.

What Granite Falls Projects Look Like

Wooded homesites. Many parcels around Granite Falls are forested. Turning one into a homesite means land clearing, stump removal and a building pad. In unincorporated Snohomish County, converting forested land to a residential use generally requires a Class IV-General Forest Practices permit, usually filed with the Land Disturbing Activity permit. Timber cut under a regular state harvest permit without a conversion plan can trigger a six-year development moratorium, so plan before logging.

Long driveways and private roads. Rural lots here often sit well back from the road or up a hill. We build gravel driveways and access roads with a solid base, crown, ditches and culverts. That’s what keeps a foothill driveway from washing out. New connections to county-maintained roads need a county access permit.

Slopes, creeks and buffers. Between two rivers and below the mountains, many properties have steep ground, streams or wetlands. Buffers depend on the stream type and wetland category, and steep slopes can be geologic hazard areas, which affects where clearing and grading can happen.

In town. Inside the city: home sites, additions, garages and shop pads, demolition and yard grading.

Who Issues Permits

  • Inside Granite Falls city limits: the City of Granite Falls Community Development/Permit Services handles building and land use permits through the city’s online public portal. Electrical permits are handled by Washington State L&I.
  • Outside city limits: the surrounding foothills are unincorporated and permitted by Snohomish County PDS, including clearing and grading, forest practices conversion, building and driveway access permits.

Foothill Weather

Granite Falls sits right where storms meet the Cascades, so wet-season planning matters. The county’s October 1 – April 30 seasonal limits apply to land disturbance in unincorporated areas, and we schedule clearing and grading so soil doesn’t sit exposed.
